We spent the last day of summer vacation with friends in Miami Beach. A clean sandbar with a pocket of shallow water offered a full day’s distraction for the children. They scurried along the shore, their pockets brimming with seashells; their hair, wet, tangled and full of sand, clung to their smiling faces.
As summer draws to a close, the change of seasons will soon bring man-of-war and jellyfish to our beaches. The children will shed their sun kissed nutmeg skin and blond streaked hair, and return indoors, to desks and school books, field trips and homework.
And while these days of languor will soon be set aside for many days and months of rigorous study and concentration, I am glad for the sun, the cloudless skies, and the time we shared together this summer.
